Small but mighty, workhorse, silent hero — these are just a few ways to describe the grommet. This tiny, commonly metal ring helps hang vinyl banners and other signage. It secures a rope or pole space to pass through and hold up the banner.

What Types of Grommets Are There?

There is a plethora of grommet types for custom banners. The most widely used banner grommets are metal (of varying types), plastic and sometimes even rubber. Metal grommets are considered very durable. Now we’re going to discuss the pros and cons of grommet types.

1.Large Rubber Grommets (or small rubber grommets)

One of the things people like about rubber grommets is the fact that there are no sharp edges. Sharp edges on metal grommets can sometimes cut the material that runs through them, such as a rope. The rope could get frayed if a metal grommet gets damaged.

2.Plastic Grommets

Just like rubber grommets, the main benefit is to stop sharp edges in their tracks. Plastic grommets can be entirely synthetic or metal grommets covered in a plastic coating. These will keep rope or twine from getting frayed if you have a damaged grommet.

3.Metal Grommets

Metal grommets for banners, whether made of brass or some other type of metal, have proven to be very reliable. Brass grommets coated in nickel are the most widely used. Metal grommets (ours are nickel-plated brass) are an industry-standard in today’s world when it comes to having durable grommets.

Adding Grommets to a Vinyl Banner

Now that you understand the basics let’s explain how to install grommets to vinyl banners. There are a few ways to insert grommets.

The first is a DIY approach using a grommet gun. It requires some physical strength with a hand tool to push the grommets together from the front and back sides of the vinyl material. Next, it punches a hole and binds the grommets together so you can hang your sign. Think of it like a bigger-hole puncher.
